Koh Tao the return, making the step up to Diving Instructor

djl blog koh tao the return diving instructor

I arrived back on Koh Tao after a three year absence this May. I had been back in the UK continuing to dive and work as a divemaster.  But the conditions were far more stressful than anything Koh Tao has to offer. So I decided to pack my life back into a rucksack and head back out for a wild adventure as a PADI Scuba Instructor.

IDC at Davy Jones Locker, Koh Tao

The decision to do my IDC at Davy Jones Locker was a simple one. After working for DJL three years ago as a divemaster I already knew the reputation of their course directors. My IDC was two weeks of hard work and revision but Pete the Course Director prepped me and the other candidates extremely well.

Should I take the Master Scuba Diver Trainer internship?

Upon completing my Instructors exam I decided to begin a Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) internship. I wanted to gain experience and develop my own teaching style whilst under very experienced supervision. I would strongly recommend doing an MSDT internship for any future instructor candidates. It really helped me to grow and learn in a safe and controlled manner what I should and shouldn't do. I learned that as a scuba instructor I have a great deal of responsibility to my students in terms of health and safety. It's also important to ensure that my students have a life changing experience that will inspire then to continue diving. Or, even better, inspire them to take care and concern about the underwater environment that makes up 80% of our planet.

Start a fantastic new career as a Diving Instructor

I will end this blog on the fact that great risks reap big rewards. By quitting my pretty safe and steady job and heading out to Thailand to further my scuba diving career I managed to secure my dream job at a fantastic dive school. Everyone here is extremely helpful which creates a wonderful atmosphere to be in and around. So everyone head down to DJL and begin your dive career today.
