PADI Advanced Course - Koh Tao Thailand

The PADI Advanced Open Water Course consists of five more open water dives which introduce exciting new areas of diving. The duration of the course is two or three days depending on which dives you choose.

Two of the dives are mandatory - the deep dive and underwater navigation dive.

In the deep dive we'll take you right down to 30 metres. We'll make a test to see if you suffer any nitrogen narcosis, examine a pressure related object to appreciate the surrounding four atmospheres and make a depth gauge comparison to demonstrate the differences between analogue and digital meters. We'll then explore the site and make a slow ascent up to safety stop depth. Providing weather conditions are good we'll make this dive at the Chumphon Pinnacles - you should get to see large grey reef sharks and giant groupers around the base of the pinnacles - awesome!

boat-handling-lozenge.gifDuring the underwater navigation dive we'll explain the principles we use to find our way around the dive sites. This includes compass work and using a timing device, combined with natural navigation such as depth, bottom composition, contour, rock formations, corals and sunlight. You'll complete some simple exercises such as measuring distances and navigating a square pattern, then armed with a map of the dive site you'll lead us around the reef and hopefully back to the boat in a timely fashion. Sounds easy?

The other three dives are optional - you can discuss with your instructor which dives will benefit you most. Options include;

Peak performance buoyancy: This is an optional dive that we highly recommend you to take as it will improve your movemnt through the water by ensuring that you equipment is streamlined, your weights are positioned correctly and you are using the right amount of weights.  We'll also focus on how you control your breathing, this is all aimed at improving your air consumption rate to make it longer which in turn will result in you being able to dive for longer!!  We'll play lots of games underwater to make you focus on your buoyancy control. Choosing this dive can make a big improvement to your diving.

tech-diving-lozenge.gifNight Dive: This is a very different experience to daytime diving and is a very popular choice for people when they take the Advanced Open Water course.  Armed with an underwater flashlight you'll plunge down into the darkness to explore the reef by night. We'll probably make this dive at White Rock - we get giant barracuda coming in for night time hunting action.  The barracudas follow in your shadow, darting out to snap up small rabbit fish!  Also expect to see corals filter feeding, lots more crabs plus increased stingray activity.

Wreck Dive: We're fortunate to have a nice wreck which is perfect for training dives here on Koh Tao, you won't be able to penetrate the wreck on this dive, but you can go and take a look and if this gets your excitement levels rising then talk to us about the Wreck Diver Specialty where you will learn how to safely penetrate ship wrecks!!

Multi level & Computer Dive: Deep diving is fun as it extends the limits of your exploration, but bottom time becomes limited if you follow a single level dive profile. If we move to a more sophisticated planning technique, using a multi level plan (and back this up by wearing a dive computer) we can vastly increase our available bottom time. This also allows us an opportunity to make another great deep dive.

Underwater Naturalist: Learn to appreciating the relationships between different marine species and start to identify some of the different organisms that we encounter in the underwater world.

Search and Recovery. Learn how to execute some of the most common underwater search patterns such as a U - search or expanding square. We'll also show you how to use lift bags to recover objects that are too heavy for you to safely recover with just your BCD.

Underwater Photography: Ever fancies yourself as a bit of an underwater David Bailey?  If so you may enjoy trying this Adventure dive, before you go on the dive we'll give you some tips on how to use the camera and some tips to get the best shots and then we'll let you loose on the marine life around Koh Tao armed with your camera . We'll then burn the photos onto CD so you have a nice souvenir to take home. Costs 1500 baht extra for camera rental and DVD of pictures.

Drift Dive: With Koh Tao not really having much in the way of a current around the dive sites here we don't offer this adventure dive on Koh Tao, if you really want to do this adventure dive then we can offer it at our dive centre on Koh Lipe.

Dive Propulsion Vehicles: Get a dose of 'James Bond Style' underwater dive propulsion vehicle action! Save air, see more of the dive site and have an exhilarating time in the process. Costs 1500 baht extra.
