Dive Instructor Development Course (IDC)

Open Water Scuba Instructor Course at DJL Koh Tao

At DJL we provide a 14 day IDC course which starts off with a 2 day preparation course to allow our Course Director to assess each IDC candidate so in general we start our IDC the day before everyone else.  This is an additional service provided by DJL when you take your Dive Instructor course here with us.

If you arrive a up to 2 weeks before this of course you'll be able to get in a few free fun dives and assist on some courses whilst you get settled in.

After the 2 day prep course you then go into the IDC as normal, but now your Course Director will know which areas to spend more time focusing on to deliver a more personalised IDC experience for you.

The last 2 days are when you will be taking the Instructor Exam which is moderated by external PADI examiners.

By the end of the PADI Divemaster course you will be qualified to lead certified divers, assist instructors with student diver training, organize diving logistics (such as arranging equipment, diver flow and delivering briefings) plus conduct refresher courses for divers that have had an extended period without diving.

At DJL you will become part of our team. You will get a real insight into how the shop runs and as time passes will adopt more and more responsibility, becoming a critical member of our diving staff. Taking a training internship to become a dive professional is a serious commitment - at the end of the course we are signing to say that you are capable of looking after other divers. As such you should enter this program understanding the level of commitment needed to succeed.

This doesn't mean that we don't have fun! On the contrary, I and many other dive pros remember our Divemaster Trainee (DMT) days as some of the best we've had! It's a fantastic moment when you make the transition from being just another diver, to someone that customers are looking to as an example and turning to for advice and guidance.

The duration of this internship is one or two months, depending on you! The minimum number of dives required to pass is sixty, but at DJL you should expect to leave with more than 100.

We cover a wide range of detailed diving theory such as physics, physiology, dive equipment, environmental considerations, industry and agency standards which we have to operate within and decompression theory.

Included in your PADI Divemaster course you'll get your own copy of all the student materials that you need, these are 8,000 baht of the 38,000 baht Divemaster course price. That includes:

  • PADI Divemaster & Instructor Manual
  • PADI Encylopedia of recreational diving
  • PADI Electronic Recreational Dive Planner [ERDP/ML]
  • PADI Scuba Tune Up Guide
  • PADI Divemaster Slates

What's not included:

Divemaster membership application fee (this is paid directly to PADI when you complete the course which is currently $187 Australian dollars, this may change without notice)

Accommodation, however we can book you into one of the places we use for the Internship accommodtion that you can see here from 9,000 baht per month, of course you are welcome to arrange your own accommodation separately.

Equipment, you are welcome to use your own diving equipment if you have brought it with you or if you would like to purchase equipment once you arrive you can buy it at a discounted rate as part of one of our divemaster internship packages. The internship package also includes payment of PADI fees and unlimited fun diving for life! at Davy Jones Locker. Alternatively if you don't need your own equipment we do have equipment available to rent at a cost of 6000 thb per month and you are able to use this equipment for the entire course and for the unlimited fun diving you have for the duration of the divemaster course.

During the Divemaster course

The Divemaster course is accompanied with a comprehensive program of water work.

You'll take part in several skills circuits, getting your demonstrations up to instructor standard. You'll also map a dive site, undertake an underwater equipment exchange with another diver whilst buddy breathing, make an emergency assistance plan for Koh Tao and complete a number of stamina exercises. You don't need to be an Olympic swimmer, but you do need to comfortable in the water. You'll practice underwater navigation and get to know the dive sites around Koh Tao - by the end of the course you'll be leading our customers on guided dives, briefing them, controlling them in the water and showing then all the great marine life around the sites.

The biggest section of the internship is to assist our instructors with student divers in training. You'll help out on Open Water courses, advanced courses and even rescues. You'll witness all sorts of student diver difficulties which will prepare you for life after graduation - if you can deal with these you can deal with anything!

The way we structure the course is that you'll be assigned to one instructor as your mentor. They'll make sure you are getting everything you need and are progressing through your course. We'll mix up the academics and water work so that your course is balanced. If you have areas which need improvement, we can put extra work as you progress.

When assisting on courses you'll get to work with all our instructors, along with students from all over the world. One of the best things about being a dive professional is the rich variety of people that you come into contact with!

Evening time all the staff and customers head down to our bar to watch the days diving video, savor a few cold beers or enjoy the fantastic Sairee Beach sunsets!

After you graduate, the choice is yours! You can stick around on Koh Tao and find work as a Divemaster. At DJL we make a big effort to employ good DMC graduates.

You also have a great means of visiting some of the world's most beautiful spots, finding work where other people only ream of traveling - Thailand, The Philippines, Australia, Mexico, The Caribbean or Red Sea . . . . up to you! You may choose to make the step up to instructor or take a course to become an underwater videographer - the possibilities are endless.

Here's a detailed description of our PADI Instructor Package:

Introduction

Life as Dive Instructor can be a very rewarding and challenging job, and of course extremely enjoyable one too. As well as being able to introduce others to the amazing underwater world not just here in Koh Tao, Thailand but the rest of the world, there are also many new opportunities arising for Dive Instructors all over the world.

The DJL Diving Instructor Development Course (IDC) aims to prepare new instructors to meet and take advantage of those opportunities. The program is conducted by experienced Platinum rated PADI Course Directors.

Our IDC on Koh Tao follows a proven educational approach which focuses on real-life application of knowledge gained throughout the course. Business principles, marketing strategies and how to increase earnings through Instructor-level continuing education programs, are all addressed and discussed throughout the program and will be valuable and relevant all around the world not just here on Koh Tao or in Thailand.

Instructor Training Schedule

The DJL Diving PADI IDC schedule is conducted over 14 days(including the 2 day prep course and mock exam) and including free lunch at one of the best restaurants on Koh Tao, our very own dive school Pool Bar & Restaurant! Our team base the training schedule around you after, they do this by following their own tried and proven methods.

  • Firstly all candidates attending the IDC will begin with a 2-day preparation course which will allow our team to shore up any lost or unclear Divemaster theory and work on skills training in our on-site confined water training facility. If there are any gaps in your knowledge this preparation course will allow our Course Directors to identify these and then give extra focus to these areas during the IDC.
  • This will be followed by an 12-day AI/OWSI program which will include one day for EFR Instructor training. Most days are split pretty evenly between water work and classroom time.
  • Rather than condensing all the info into the minimum possible timsescale, we opt for shorter days [finishing between 4 - 5 pm].
  • We feel that the shorter days [spread over a longer period] allow for an enhanced retention of the material covered.
  • The last 2 days before the PADI IE we will conduct a mock IE on our premises.
  • This is just a chance to build confidence and prove your readiness on the days before you progress to the IE.
  • We guarentee success in the PADI Instructor exam. If you don't pass, you can take the next IDC for free.

Once you qualify as a PADI Instructor ....

  • Once you've qualified as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you have the option to stick around and teach your first few certifications here on Koh Tao at DJL Diving.
  • You'll get the chance to build up teaching experience plus if you opt to do the Silver, Gold or Platinum IDC packages you can get certified as a PADI Master Scuba Diver Traininer [MSDT], enabling you to teach specialty courses [e.g. deep, enriched air, navigation etc].
  • To read more about our PADI MSDT internship click here.

Instructor development courses take place every month on Koh Tao Thailand.

You can check our IDC dates on our schedule here, ask us questions by emailing us via the contact us section, & book your PADI Instructor Course online by completing the details on our booking page.

We try to reply to you within 24 hours.

MSDT Prep / Internship

The PADI MSDT Internship option is a minimum 4 week program that you will usually start after your IE when you certify as a PADI OWSI. PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer is the next level of instructor up from OWSI and there are two components to the course - learning to teach and upgrading your Specialty Instructor rating. Find out more about the MSDT course on page 2

Learning to teach

During your DM course you will have assisted other instructors with students in training, but after completion of your IDC, you will see teaching in a whole new light. Many people say it is similar to the change you feel when you go from being an Advanced to a Rescue Diver.

Now that you are an OWSI you will have learned all about the PADI system and will have all the tools necessary to teach, but you can never really know how to teach without first hand experience.

Instead of being 'thrown out' to discover how to teach for yourself, the MSDT program at Davy Jones Locker offers you a way to become a competent instructor at your own pace and under the nurturing eye of our instructors.

You can start this program as soon as you wish after the IE. As it takes 3 weeks for your instructor number to come through you cannot actually teach as an instructor during this time. You will be eager to start teaching and as a PADI Divemaster you will be able to do everything that a Divemaster can do. So you will start by assisting with other instructors. You will watch and learn from them. You will see how they teach in a completely new light with the hindsight and experience of your IDC.

At the end of each session you will get a debriefing from the instructor, similar to the ones you received during your DM assists. These will include what you did well and what you can improve on as well as ideas for next time, feedback on how well you dealt with the task at hand etc. As you get more confident you will slowly start taking over teaching from the instructor, although the instructor will always be there with you.

Eventually, once your instructor rating has come through you will be able to start to teaching students yourself and certifying students. One of our instructors will always accompany you on courses whilst you are on this program so you will still have the opportunity to learn from them.

Specialty Instructor Ratings

Once you are a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor you will be able to teach all of the PADI core courses. But you will want to continue your education and branch out to teach other courses. Not only will this make for a more varied teaching experience for you, but it will increase your marketability to potential employers and enable you to sell more courses to your students.

After certification as a PADI Instructor we can offer you Specialty Instructor courses. Choose from a wide range of PADI Specialty Instructor ratings. Some of the more popular are Nitrox, Digital Underwater Photography, O2 Provider, Deep and Night.

To earn the MSDT rating you will complete 5 Specialties Instructor Ratings with our Course Director. After you gained 25 certifications (you have personally certified 25 people), you will be able to apply directly to PADI for the Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating.

You will then be able to certify divers completely up to Master Scuba Diver level, which is Open Water, AOW, EFR, Rescue and 5 Specialty certifications.
