The highlight for many divers is seeing the huge [but harmless] whale sharks that visit Koh Tao. Around the island you may see whale sharks of 7-8 meters in length. Spectacular!

One of the most important things when you are travelling abroad is the people you meet.
Koh Tao is a lively destination with plenty of beach resorts and a great atmosphere, it has many visitors from around the world - Europeans, North and South Americans, Scandinavians and Asians - we have customers from everywhere.
Taking your diving internship with DJL Diving on Koh Tao will mean that you get to know a wide range of people from very different backgrounds.
A Divemaster internship on Koh Tao really has international flair!

DJLs' Boats

In this part of the world most people use converted fishing boats for diving. There are many reasons for this - the boats are affordable to convert and easy dive from, and the Thais have a great deal of experience using & maintaining them, which makes life easy.

DJL's 'Big boat' is a 20 meter converted fishing boat. It has tank holderers with space to cater for 30 divers. It has all of the required necessary items [emergency oxygen, western toilet, sundeck ,snack and beverage facilities].

DJL's 'Tech boat' is a 16 meter converted fishing boat. It has a tank holder with space to cater for 20 divers. There is a compressor on board, and all other necessary items [emergency oxygen, western toilet, sundeck ,snack and beverage facilities].

During your PADI Divemaster internship with DJL you will go diving from both boats.

Diving Research & Deep Wreck - Technical Diving

A characteristic feature of DJL Diving is our devotion to wreck and technical diving and the search for new wrecks and dive sites.
We are passionate about diving research and always active in organizing exciting diving expeditions. It doesn't generate a large amount of money, but it is the reason many people at DJL work in the diving industry. There is always something new & exciting to discover.
You would not enroll for a course at a university which doesn't conduct research - we apply the same principle for diving. Research diving keeps everyone interested and is a dynamic, stimulating environment for learning and work.
Whilst taking your PADI Divemaster internship with DJL Diving you will have the opportunity to take some additional Tech courses which will then allow you the chance to participate. You can begin with diving on our local wrecks, then maybe take part in the research.
Over the last few years we have located and dived many wrecks in Thailand and beyond. To read about the last diving expeditions, take a look at

Wide variety of dive sites around Koh Tao

With its diversity of dive sites Koh Tao has a lot to offer visitors. Surrounding the island are shallow coral reefs where you can see a variety of tropical sea life. Further out are more isolated dive sites such as Chumphon & Southwest Pinnacles, which are the habitat for bigger fish.
Koh Tao also has deep wrecks such as the Unicorn and Torpedo [Thai cargo ships] & a Japanese WW2 Schooner. With DJL you get the chance to dive on these wrecks.
The distance to our dive sites is short, which gives more time for diving - we go out at least twice a day. We try to visit many different dive sites, so that you can see more. If you want to read more about the dive sites, visit our 'Koh Tao's dive sites' page.

12 months diving season in the Gulf of Thailand

The size and location of Koh Tao means that we are in the fortunate positon to be able to provide diving all year round - no matter what the weather conditions are, we can always dive on the sheltered side of the island.
Even if it's windy, our position in the Gulf of Thailand means that the waves do not usually get too high.
We are open all year round, so you can start your dive internship whenever it suits you!

Divemaster Internship Steps

 Steps for PADI Divemaster Internship

Start your Gap year with DJL Diving. Our gap year internship includes all courses from beginner up to PADI Divemaster.

You'll also receive all required diving manuals, your own full set of scuba equipment to keep, unlimited diving during the internship and student materials (for example dive planning tables) plus all application fees.

Getting a Visa for your Scuba Diving Internship in Thailand.

Lets now take a look at the visa regulations in Thailand & how to get the best possible visa for your diving internship, plus discuss some frequently asked questions:

If you make no prior arrangements & fly straight into Thailand you'll be issued with a 30 day 'Visa On Arrival'. Since the duration of the internship is two months you'll make either have to 'visa runs' to another country (excluding Myanmar) in order to remain in Thailand, or you can go over to the immigration office in Koh Samui and get your visa extended by 30 days there.

"Visa Runs"

This means crossing the border out of Thailand and then re-entering. If you do a "border bounce" you will leave Thailand, cross the border, then come back in on the same day. However tourists are now limited to the amount of times this can be done over the period of 1 year. Depending on which country you are from you will either be issued with a stamp for 15 days or 30 days. If you go to the Thai Embassy/consulate in somewhere like Malaysia, Lao or Cambodia you can apply for a 60 day tourist visa which can then be extended by 30 days in Koh Samui before it expires, giving you a total of 90 days.

This is ok, but there is a cheaper and easier way of doing things.

These visas are available from embassies or consulates in your home country and you will probably save money on travel and visa costs if you abtain a visa before you arrive. At present the standard visa that is issued is a 60 day single entry tourist visa, which can be extended by another 30 days in Koh Samui before it expires. There is also a 6 month multi entry tourist visa that is also available if a person apllies in their home country. However the regulations and requirements to obtain this visa are quite strict so it is best to check with you local thai consulate to see if you are eligible.

If you qualify for a visas over 60 days you'll need a couple of documents from us (which we e-mail to you once you have paid your deposit for the internship as we are confirming that you are coming to take the training with us and so essentially acting as your sponsor for the visa). There is an application fee but it works out much better than going down the 'visa on arrival' route.

You need to contact your local Thai consulate for the exact fee, but expect it to be a little over 150 US dollars.

Our advice is don't leave things till the last minute - sometimes these things take a while to organize so be proactive, however you can't apply too early either as you have to enter Thailand to activate your visa within 90 days of it being issued.

10 Good Reasons to Join the DJL Family

What next?

What options are available once you finish your Dive Internship?

At the end of your diving internship if you're not ready to return home, there are many new options open to you.

Extend your Gap Year Internship with Paid Work in Diving:

Koh Tao Thailand is a popular dive destination.

At the end of your gap year dive internship, as a PADI Divemaster [or PADI Instructor if you choose the instructor Course Add-On], there are many opportunities to work in diving.

Social Aspect

The Social Side of Taking a Gap Year Scuba Diving Internship:

One thing you don't have to worry about is enjoying yourself during your PADI Diving Internship here on Koh Tao Thailand.

We have a great social scene, so you'll be sure to have a lot of fun. Most people that travel to Koh Tao are here on holiday, so pretty much everyone is in a good mood. Plus our staff and other interns mix to form a nice social crowd.

After a days diving we can normally be found enjoying a cold beer in one of the beach bars, or enjoying one of the many restaurants that Koh Tao has to offer. There's always someone to hang out with!

You'll make lots of great friends and get to meet people from all over the world - this is one of the best things about taking your dive internship here in Thailand.

In Koh Tao, there's a party going on somehere every night.

Because Koh Tao is a beach resort environment [with a lot of young people] there are many people out partying & drinking every night of the week!

This raises an important point - excessive drinking & scuba diving don't mix. We all enjoy a couple of beers in the evening but it's unwise to 'get hammered' when you know you're diving the following day.

We all need to let our hair down from time to time - that's fine! You just need to plan a day off diving if you're intending to have a late night!

With regard to diving internships our policy is this: You can take a day off whenever you want. If you sign up for dives we expect you to turn up. It's not great when you don't show because you've got a hangover - simple common courtesy.

We want you to turn out as a strong PADI Divemaster, and enjoy your time here on Koh Tao, Thailand.

You just need to find the right balance of work & play!

Taking an internship to become a dive pro is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding activities you can do.

It's a great moment when you make the transition from being just another diver, to someone that the other customers look to for guidance and advice. Working as a Divemaster is a great experience.

What kind of people take Scuba diving internship with DJL?

There is no stereotype of what kind of people join our diving internships - the one thing they all have in common is they are searching for an exciting and rewarding challenge .
